Qigong (氣功)has been around for thousand of years rooted in Chinese philosophy (e.g. Daoism), Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and martial arts. Qi literally means energy, and more specifically, 'vital energy' in TCM.  When Qi in us is not circulating well, it creates disharmony in our body which manifests itself as a pain body, illnesses or diseases.  The underlying premise of practicing Qigong is to restore a balance flow of qi in our body.
